Belonging

Belonging is one of the 3 elements of inclusion, according to McKinsey: Diversity Wins: How Inclusion Matters (2020) and an important one. How included do we make people feel by our actions? How often do we reflect on our own behaviours? 🤔

Belonging isn’t just a feeling – it’s an active effort to ensure people feel included, comfortable and accepted.

It’s easy to appreciate people for what they do, but we don’t often celebrate people for who they are – a few kind words or shared enjoyment can show someone that they do matter. If they express that they feel like an outsider, be open and willing to listen and then together figure out a solution.

Sometimes, we can assume people are fine purely because they’re present – but that isn’t always the case. Whether it’s someone in your friendship group, a neighbour or colleague, checking in can go along way in making someone feel as though they belong in the environment  that they’re in.

Creating a space where people feel safe to speak up, have uncomfortable conversations and be vulnerable is also key to fostering a sense of belonging.

By reflecting on belonging, we can begin to ensure those around us feel included and heard.
