Black History Month

Today is the commencement of Black History month. I would like to celebrate this month by sharing some history of black pioneers through the ages, often forgotten about and very rarely taught in our schools. I will be concentrating particularly on black women who are overwhelmingly under-represented in many organisations today, particularly in senior positions. An often unheard and unseen talented minority.

Today is Amanirenas (40 BC – 10 AD) Warrior Queen of the powerful Nubian region of Kush which is present day Sudan. Referred to as “Candace” in some European literature. She fought alongside her husband and son in a war against a larger and more powerful rival, the Roman Empire. She lost an eye during battle which made her even more courageous as a warrior. She took part in a pre-emptive strike against Rome and led a counterattack after Rome destroyed the capital of Kush and took thousands into slavery. Her successful military attacks led to a peace treaty with Rome, securing 400 years of peace and prosperity for Kush.
