I was out for my usual morning run close to where I live, enjoying listening to the birds singing, enjoying the country scenery, and breathing in some good, clean fresh air. As I was running along a lane past some farmland, I saw a white van drive past me. I didn’t think anything of it. The 50 or so yards ahead, I watched the van pull into a lay-by and stop. It wasn’t a place I had ever seen a vehicle pull into as it didn’t lead anywhere. It looked like the driver was attempting to turn the vehicle around but then stopped. I became a little wary. As I approached the van, the driver lowered the window. I slowed right down. I was on a deserted road, with no traffic and nowhere to escape. The driver, a white man, called out to me, “Excuse me!” I approached cautiously, considering my options to ensure my safety.
He said, “Firstly, I just wanted to say, Black Lives Matter. Secondly, you might want to consider running on the other side of the road as it’s safer due to the blind bends.”
I was really touched that he’d gone out of his way to convey his sentiments. He didn’t have to do that. He could have carried on his merry way. That small gesture that people really do care and want to show that care in their own way.
