LLN Christmas Lunch
Thursday 7th December 2017

Dear all,

For our Christmas lunch, we are delighted to confirm that our guest speaker will be the inspirational Irene Afful, Merseyside Police’s first black female inspector.

This is our last lunch of 2017 and details of the 2018 lunches will be circulated following this event.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Best wishes,

Lindsey, Jayne & Louise

About the speaker:
Irene Afful

“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at them.”

“As a young girl growing up in Toxteth, Irene Afful was abused by racist police officers, but went on to become Merseyside Police’s first black female inspector and helped transform its culture. However, it wasn’t always a mantle that sat comfortably on her shoulders. Rather than being defined by her race or sex, Irene’s main motivation during her 25 years on the force was to be a good copper.

Irene’s story is one of a pioneer who battled endemic racism and sexism to eventually help bring about cultural change within the force. Now a businesswoman running her own coaching and consultancy venture, Ametrine Enterprise Solutions, Irene helps others fulfill their potential and achieve their goals, as well as supporting organizations to develop strategies for equality, diversity & inclusion, leadership development and delivering wellbeing at work programs.

Irene has worked in many parts of the Merseyside area in various roles, both as an operational uniformed officer and a detective. She has worked on some high profile investigations and dealt with some very sensitive cases, particularly in the fields of child protection and domestic violence. Irene was promoted to Sergeant in August 1998, after 7 years’ service. She worked in various roles around the force both uniformed and investigative, including the Professional Standards Department, investigating complaints against police officers.

In June 2003, Irene was promoted to Inspector and became the highest ranking black woman officer in Merseyside Police at that time. She was the first black female inspector in the history of Merseyside Police. Again, Irene worked in a variety of roles, both uniformed and investigative. She spent 5 years as a detective inspector at the Force Major Incident Team, investigating murders. Irene has also served as Chair and Deputy Chair of Merseyside’s Black Police Association from March 2004 until 2009 and then as an executive committee member until 2016. She was awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation for her work with the association.”
